The Army of the Republic of New Haven's origins are rooted in the Tamiya Elite, a mercenary company that developed a reputation as a cut above the rest in terms of effective tactics, low pay rates, ethical treatment of prisoners, and war relief to those victimized by their oppressors. Organized by Tamiya Nyan, he singlehandedly tempered a small mercenary unit into a noble and hard charging band of heroes that would take on any job that did not offend their moral virtues. When Tamiya Nyan conceived the notion of founding a new nation on an island off of the Pacific Coast of old British Columbia, the Tamiya Elite loyally followed his example and made his cause their own.
The earliest days of the Republic were difficult. The local denizens were weary and fearful that these newcomers may be tyrants or were seeking to make a profit from their humble ways of life - but over time those fears were quelled as time and time again the Tamiya Elite battled against all manner of sea monsters, Haida raiders, and even one epic battle against a Reacher of the Deep! Through reputation, word of mouth, and the ever increasing trade between the Kingdom of Desert Star and her neighbors the new nation was coming to be known as a Shangri-La of sorts far to the west concealed in the mists of the western coast. While immigration was slow at first, gradually settlers found their way to the island to establish a nation of their own - a nation Nyan dubbed New Haven.
It was apparent that the Tamiya Elite would not be sufficient to defend a nation growing at the rate at which it was and so asked for volunteers among immigrants and natives of Vancouver Island to submit to military training to defend their people, their homes, and their new nation. Gradually the people warmed to the idea and thus training began. Meanwhile, with the assistance of the Royal Armory of Desert Star, a small series of foundries were constructed to produce the bare essentials for a modern army.
The training program for the new military was grueling, some would even say brutal, but instructors were careful not to push Cadets to the point of breaking or having a psychotic episode. While training originally reflected the military occupations of the Central Powers Region, it gradually evolved into a specialist form of training that began with a lengthy basic training program followed by specialized training for which each Cadet was hand picked based upon his/her performance during basic training. (See the New Haven Military Bushi O.C.C. for details.) Two particular facets of this unique training is that ALL military personnel are taught to speak Japanese and in the use of the Tachi. (Similar to a Katana, but suspended from the belt by fittings, in a blade down configuration.) Japanese is not commonly spoken in North America, and therefore without a proper translator communications would remain relatively secure and furthermore mandatory training in the sword would make the New Haven Bushi equally lethal in melee combat as in ranged combat.
The indigenous people of the island already possessed the capability to produce small light mega-damage watercraft which in itself was a sincere benefit to the cause. However, for more versatile and durable equipment trade would somehow have to be established. Five years after the capital city of New Haven came under construction the answer revealed itself - the TW Iron Horses that crisscross the west. Trade of raw materials with the Kingdom of Desert Star as well as the Hope Baronies allowed New Haven to acquire its first high tech military equipment, such as power armor, armored vehicles, and heavier weaponry. Meanwhile the industrial capabilities of New Haven were improving as well.
In the early '90s it became abundantly clear that New Haven was becoming far too reliant on the Royal Armory of Desert Star both for imports and licensed production of R.A.D.S. equipment. Thus the "Liberty Initiative" was launched to ramp up the development of indigenous industries, reducing the reliance on foreign imports to a bare minimum. Given the circumstances behind this revelation, the Republican Council thought it prudent to gear new products so that captured or commercial ammunition could be used by domestically produced weaponry - while an enemy using captured munitions could not use it in their own weaponry.
In the years since the establishment of the Army of the Republic of New Haven it has seen considerable action both at home and abroad. Haida Raiders from the Queen Charlotte Islands routinely raid coastal communities. Horune Pirates attack small settlements along the coast stripping all valuables and enslave the inhabitants. Sea monsters come ashore and cause all manner of havoc including the destruction of crops, farm houses, and even small villages. A supernatural predator, known only as the Vancouver Horror, is a constant menace to those living in rural locations. A short but vicious war was fought between Water Point Preserve and New Haven, with New Haven's Army nearly annihilating the whole of Water Point Preserve's Army a few miles south of Taylorville. Small skirmishes after were fought in the vicinity of the fortified city of Water Point Preserve, each of which proved that New Haven's military capabilities and training were superior in every way. During the Tolkeen War, the Tamiya Elite took up a long term contract in the Pecos region to compensate for the Vampire Hunters that had traveled north to fight alongside of the Tolkeenites. Then at the end of the war, volunteers from both the Kingdom of Desert Star and the Republic of New Haven cooperated in an operation to evacuate as many Tolkeenites from the rapidly falling Kingdom before it was too late. In total over 68,000 civilians and war weary soldiers were airlifted out of Tolkeen over the course of two and a half weeks, at the loss of a quarter of the 24 member volunteer crew. More than half of those rescued from Tolkeen opted to immigrate to the Republic of New Haven and were provided with a generous grant and support to build a new city on the southern coast of Sanctuary Harbor adjacent to Sanctuary Harbor Naval Base.
In 109PA Tamiya Nyan publically announced that the Tamiya Elite would be disbanding by the beginning of 110PA and that members of the unit were free to maintain their citizenship, earned through their service to both the Republic and to him personally. He encouraged his colleagues, friends, and subordinates to retire and make a life for themselves as civilians or to enlist as members of the New Haven Bushi. Most have opted for the latter.
In the years since the founding and the establishment of the Liberty Initiative, the Republic of New Haven relies very little on foreign imports for national defense, thanks to Smithe Corporation, L & N Electronics, Republican Industries, Republican Shipyards, and Akersley Shipyards. The Army of the Republic of New Haven maintains the same mission as always; The defense of the Republic both at home and abroad. THAT may one day soon change however, with the Vampire Kingdoms becoming increasingly aggressive and having used a special task force to manipulate the war between Water Point Preserve and New Haven years prior.
