The farmers who raise livestock are no where near as organized as the Cropgrowers of Wa-Daisho, as each operate completely autonomously from the other. Pricing of animal related products is VERY competetive as a result of this, causing near constant price wars among those who raise livestock. Furthermore there are no where near as many large livestock farms as there are cropgrowing farms in the Republic. The reasons for this are two fold - the first and most important is the abundance of seafood supplied to Wa-Daisho making livestock grown food comparatively expensive making it a much smaller market, thus the second reason is lack of organization and the resulting competetion for that small niche in the market keeps any one livestock raising farm from growing terribly large.
There are a handful of beef cattle raising farms in Wa-Daisho, located primarily in the foothills of the Dragon's Teeth Mountains along the Republic Highway in the stretch between Silverstone and Shiunren. The Toolette Cropgrowers Cooperative, a member of 4C, has a stable of some 50 Dairy Cattle, located East of the Dragon's Teeth Mountains. Some small time farmers have a handful of cattle they raise for Dairy and for Beef as well. None of the cattle raising farmers gross profits of over 250,000 credits a year. Naming each would be rather meticulous and pointless. For slaughter purposes, the cattle are transported to Homel, (Three miles North of the City of Wa-Daisho on the Republic Highway, and a Mile West of the Republican Highway.) and processed into various cuts of meat, the hooves, bones, and waste products are ground down and used for pet food, animal feed, and for fertilizer. Food products are packaged according to cuts, and are wrapped in a clear wrapping with a black plastic tray underneath, with a price labeled on it - along with the weight of the cut of meat, and the name of the Farm that raised the cattle. From there it is sent to the markets in Wa-Daisho City, the Underground City, Silverstone, and from there it goes all over the Republic and to Water Point Preserve. Rachel's Textile Productions typically purchases 30-60% of the hides every year to process it and fashion clothing out of it. Smithe Corp usually purchases 10-20% of the hides every year for various goods such as belts, tool harnesses, and coverings for seats of civilian vehicles. The remaining hide is sold to Republican Industries, Cottage Industry, and Hobbyists. Manure is usually either shipped to TCC, Smithe Corp, for packaging and distribution.
The raising of swine is a very small market industry, usually with only a handful raised by this farmer or that. The reason being that Swine consume a great deal of resources without giving much back as a result. Pork, because of this, is one of the most expensive meats in Wa-Daisho. They are cultivated exclusively for food products and fertilizer. Again Homel is the company that processes the food products.
The largest livestock industry in Wa-Daisho is Sheep. Given the cool climate wool is a highly sought after medium for clothing. In addition to this they are also useful for food products including mutton, sheep milk, and a couple of varieties of cheese. Sheep farms pock mark the Republic as a whole, but mostly they are found in the rocky foothills of the Dragon's Teeth mountains - or wherever else there is significant grazing land that is not a prospect for croplands due to alcalinity in the soil, the soil being too rocky for any but the most hardy crops, or land that is too steep for decent crop cultivation. The largest two Sheep cattle farmers in the Republic;
Avian Livestock is also quite popular in Wa-Daisho. There are a handful of solely avian farmers in the Republic, but none that gross any more than 100k in profits. More popular than these types of farms, however, are the farmers who choose to also raise a healthy stock of Chickens, Turkeys, Geese, or Ducks in addition to their primary products. Again, Homel processes all Avian Livestock in the Republic. Feathers are sold to Smithe Corp (40%), Rachel's Textile Productions (35%), Republican Industries, Cottage Industries, Hobbyists, and the Blue Water Mages' Guild (Combined accounts for the remaining 25%.). Waste products are ground down and used for pet food, animal feed, and fertilizer.
Prior to the cataclysm a variety of livestock was experimented with on the island, such as Alpacas, Llamas, and Emus - ultimately without the assistance of man these introductions failed to remain present. As a result, man again, and those who are not men were forced to bring their livestock with yet a second time in the history of the Island. A number of experimental livestock types have been tried, such as Gwylack, Rhino-Buffalo, Bison, and one adventurous farmer who even tried to raise a Teepowka for slaughter. Ultimately, a handful of exotic animals are raised on the island for slaughter every year. The results of this are hit and miss, and the produce of those experimentations may usually be found in the open market around the end of summer. The only truly exotic form of livestock raised in any numbers are Blacktailed Deer who are fed throughout the year by Ferosinai Farms, and then in October a percentage of them are chosen for slaughter in honour of a traditional elven harvest festival. Ferosinai Farms butchers them, themselves, and wastes NOTHING. The deer hide and food products from this are sold in the open market.
Riding animals are quite popular in the rural areas of the Republic, as where they are not too well liked in the tightly enclosed spaces of the fortified City of Wa-Daisho, and not even permitted into the Underground City of Wa-Daisho. The most common riding animal in Wa-Daisho is called the North Western Ass, an adaptive breed that seems to have only appeared sometime after the cataclysm. Mutant or experiment during the last years of the Golden Age, the North Western Ass is only slightly different from other breeds. It is generally black or dark brown in color with light brown areas around the muzzle, eyes, and underbelly. It's hair is thick and course, and unusually oily - especially around the abnormally large hooves. It seems to be an adaptation to the abnormally wet environments and temperatures in this region. In terms of temperment, for an Ass it seems to have a very good temperment, gentle, loyal, strong and sure footed - it's one vice being that it is a bit slower than other varieties. It is used as both a draft animal and as a riding animal by many people in the rural areas. Next in line is the Eastern Quarter Horse - a common animal brought to the island by settlers moving from the East. As a draft animal it is quite sufficient, but as a riding animal it is considered inferior to good riding breeds. Aside from these two breeds there are a handful of Appaloosas, Mustangs, and Pintos. No other breed of horse or riding animal is known to be bred in Wa-Daisho. During the wet months on the island all horses tend to be very illness prone, including catching colds, bloating, and suffering from hoof rot. If the soil or road way gets too soggy as well, they stand a good chance of breaking a leg. The owner of the stables a half mile North of Wa-Daisho City, however, has indicated that he would be willing to pay vast amounts for a mated pair of trained Gryphons or trained Pegasus - if provided along with the know how to train these exotic species of creatures. Were he to ever acquire these breeds, within twenty years, flying riding animals would be EXTREMELY common in Wa-Daisho. Note that there are no known exlusive horse breeders in Wa-Daisho, save for farmers owning a half dozen or so horses and annually breeding the horses to train and then sell them at the stables.
